A post inspired by, and starring some of the charismatic parrots who are my neighbours: the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoo and Pale-headed Rosella. With a cameo by the Long-billed Corella.
The evolution of the parrot beak was a major innovation in the bird world. And it’s likely that it occurred in the place we now call Australia. How and why did parrots evolve here? Another story, for another day.
This is the latest installment of my ‘Cartoon guide to Australian ecology’. The panels above are designed for social media, but the eventual aim is to collate all of these episodes into a book. See previous episodes here. If you’re a publisher or other organization who’d like to support this project, I’d love to hear from you 🙂

Makes me feel pretty useless to have to be carrying around all those tools – if only I had a parrot beak!
Aaah Mel you should never feel useless if you can actually use all those tools! Quite the handyperson I think 🙂 Plus I think I have oversimplified a teensy bit – not all parrots can do all of these things…
Fabulous tribute to the birds we live with in Queensland/Australia!
thanks Rose! Indeed 🙂
