Forget about bees’ knees, what about bird knees?
Bird leg anatomy is often misunderstood, but helpful to know, especially for artists.
The bone names are –
Thigh = Femur
Shin = Tibia & fibula in humans; tibiotarsus in birds
Foot = Tarsals & metatarsals in humans; tarsometatarsus in birds
Toes = Phalanges
A fascinating book about bird anatomy is The Unfeathered Bird by Katrina van Grouw.

Thank you Paula – I found this fascinating and you explained and illustrated birds’ legs very clearly, so I now understand the concept.
This is fabulous – a wonderful addition to your work. Kids will absolutely love this – I had never thought to wonder about this – great stuff PP.
