‘Further adventures in Nature Journaling – Drawing trees’, Binna Burra Mountain Lodge, Sunday 2nd September 2018

‘Further adventures in Nature Journaling – Drawing trees’ workshop

Trees are wonderful subjects for nature journaling, and not only because they don’t move! But how do you fit such a large subject on the page? How can you represent the distinctive foliage of a particular tree without drawing every leaf? And is it true that drawing a tree can be a meditative experience? These and other questions will be answered in this fun workshop led by a self-professed tree addict (who studies, writes about, draws and plants trees). You’ll learn lots about trees and create your own unique tree-filled nature journal entries. No experience in drawing or writing is required, but participants will benefit from attending either ‘Introduction to Nature Journaling’ or ‘Nature Journaling for Gardeners’ prior to this workshop.

Along the way, I’ll talk a bit about the ecology of Lamington National Park, and introduce basic materials for nature journaling. I use my own journals and other books to provide ideas and examples of different approaches to nature journaling. At the end of the session you will have started your very own nature journal, and have plenty of ideas to keep you inspired.

Worried that you can’t draw or write? No problems! I’ll introduce you to some simple exercises that will help to allay your fears and get those creative juices flowing.

What is nature journaling? Read all about it here.

This session is intended for adults, but interested children (10 yrs and over), are also welcome. Children under 15 years must be accompanied by an adult.

What about materials for drawing?

There are 3 options:

1. Bring your own materials (an unlined sketchbook and 2B pencil are fine to get started, but if you have other favorite materials, bring them along too).

2. Use the basic materials (plain paper, a clipboard and a 2B pencil) that I provide for free.

3. Purchase a good quality materials kit on the day for $25. A materials kit consists of a Strathmore mixed-media visual journal 14 x 20.3 cm, 2B pencil, permanent ink Pigma Micron fineliner, and a print copy of Make a Date with Nature. Retail value is approximately $35.

I will also provide coloured pencils, watercolour pencils and paints to try on the day, plus lined paper for writing.
